Bio-mechanics & Orthotics Therapy
Your feet play a pivotal role in your day to day activities. They absorb punishing amounts of pressure and constant movement and yet continue to provide that essential spring in your step that allows you to walk, run, and play.
Your feet and legs are built with the engineering complexity of advanced machinery.
And so when things go wrong it makes sense to visit an expert who has the engineering knowledge to analyse and fix the problem.
That university-trained expert is called a podiatrist.
As with any complex piece of engineering, a seemingly insignificant problem in the feet, such as overpronation, can trigger pain and problems elsewhere in the body.
The way you stand and walk and the shoes you wear can be a real pain in the neck—literally.
Our expert podiatrists have the knowledge and experience to diagnose and treat a wide range of foot issues and nail care problems including:
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Achilles Tendinitis
- Sever’s Disease
- Bunions
- Hip pain
- Knee & back pain

Biomechanical assessment
A thorough biomechanical assessment allows your podiatrist to diagnose what your foot/leg problem is but also why it’s happening. We use a wide range of tools and complex measurements to analyse the problem and to provide a lasting solution.
Whether you’re a keen runner who has developed shin splints or you have a child who is severely knock-kneed, a biomechanical assessment will start with the podiatrist taking a detailed history of the problem.
We’ll identify unhealthy pressure points with 3D imaging of your feet. We’ll also analyse the alignment of your feet, ankles, knees and hips and observe how that is affecting your spine, neck, and postural alignment.
Then, gait analysis will provide an in-depth picture of the way you move and will identify issues such as:
- Over or under pronation
- Ankle instability
- Leg length discrepancies
- Pelvis alignment
This analysis will enable your podiatrist to pinpoint the precise cause of your problem and to recommend a lasting and effective solution. Custom orthotics are one such solution and are a proven method of helping the body to overcome biomechanical shortcomings in the feet, legs, and hips.
Custom-made orthotics
Custom-made orthotics are firm moulded foot supports that fit snugly in your footwear. The exact shape of your orthotics will depend on the detailed biomechanical analysis prepared by your podiatrist.
Orthotics perform a number of functions including:
- Balancing leg length discrepancies
- Controlling pronation and supination
- Reducing excessive pressure points
- Providing arch support
The end result is improved stability, better, more efficient muscle function, and smoother walking/ running action. It may take a little time but your new custom orthotics will help you to move more easily and be pain free.
We use industry leading materials and techniques in the creation of our custom orthotics. You can expect them to provide many years of hard wearing service provided you follow the basic care and maintenance instructions.
Orthotic fitting
The biomechanic assessment and creation of your orthotics are the first steps in your recovery programme.
Your podiatrist will spend some time with you, fitting your orthotics into your shoes and making any minor adjustments to ensure you’re getting the optimal level of support.
You will need some time to adapt to your new orthotics so be patient. Start by wearing them for a few hours a day and gradually increase the length of time until you can wear them all day with no discomfort.
Your podiatrist may recommend a follow-up session to check on your progress and make any other final adjustments to the orthotics. After a few weeks you’ll wonder how you ever got by without your orthotics or your podiatrist.
