Children’s Foot conditions
At birth, children’s feet are made of cartilage and as they grow and develop this eventually becomes bone. This is an important time in your child’s life and we are able to ensure their feet develop and grow in such a way to help prevent injuries and problems later in life.
If your child is complaining of achy or sore legs/ feet, falling often or having difficulty walking, we recommend a podiatry assessment.
Our Podiatrists will be able to assess the biomechanics of the lower limb and construct a management plan to monitor their progression and growth.
We have a range of children’s orthotics that are designed to give them the support and structure their foot needs while they are growing. After all feet should last a lifetime!
With such a complex structure of bones, joints, tendons and muscles it’s hardly surprising that feet can be painful at times.
And the rapid growth changes young children experience can make it even worse. Foot pain can occur in children for a number of reasons including:
Your expert podiatrist is experienced in diagnosing and treating foot and leg problems in children. We use foot and gait analysis along with a range of other testing tools and diagnostic aids to identify any problems and provide a solution. Solutions may range from ‘do nothing’ because the child will grow out of it or ‘ongoing monitoring is needed’ to interventions using tools such as orthotics or gentle foot mobilisation techniques.
Toeing in & out
You often see very young children walking with their toes turned in (pigeon toe) or sometimes turned out. Children usually grow out of this issue but it does need to be assessed and monitored.
It is important to have a podiatrist assess your child if he or she is still walking with their toes pointing severely in after the age of 2 years and it’s causing pain and difficulties with balance.
A podiatrist will quickly determine if there is a more serious underlying cause such as leg length differences, poor alignment or a spinal condition. Shoe inserts or foot bracing may be necessary.
Flat feet
Flat feet (Pes planus) or collapsed arches are common in children but they will often grow out of it.
But if the condition persists or there is pain and difficulty walking your podiatrist may recommend supports such as custom fitted orthotics of shoe inserts.
Heel pain (Sever’s disease)
Sever’s disease is a very common cause of heel pain in children. It occurs when leg and foot bones grow faster than the tendons and muscles.
During vigorous exercise this tightness can place severe stress where the Achilles tendon attaches to the heel and cause pain and injury.
Croydon Total Footcare takes heel pain seriously. We use advanced diagnostic tools and foot care solutions to make sure your child doesn’t miss out on any of his or her favourite activities.
Knee problems & pain
Knock knees or genu valgum (knees pointing in towards each other when standing) is a very common condition in young children. Bow leg or genu varum (knees pointing out) is also often seen in children from a young age.
Children will often grow out of both conditions with no special treatment necessary.
However, it is important to see a podiatrist if the condition is severe, persists or the child is limping or experiencing pain. If these problems are not corrected they can lead to more significant problems in adulthood.
Osgood-Schlatter’s disease tends to occur in children aged 9 to 16 and is usually associated with rapid growth and intense physical activity such as running, crouching and jumping. A painful lump forms below the knee as a result of inflammation of the tendon connecting to the shin bone.
This condition too will usually disappear when the child‘s growth slows down. But your child should see a podiatrist if the pain is severe and persists.
Ingrown toenails
Ingrown toenails are common in children.
Rapid growth combined with tight footwear and vigorous activity can make children especially prone to ingrown toenails. Tender, youthful skin can quickly become inflamed, tender, and even infected if you ignore an ingrown toenail.
We can relieve that painful pressure and encourage the nail to grow back in the right way. We can also help with padding and shoe recommendations to prevent ingrown toenails coming back.
Sprained ankles, Warts, & other problems
Sprained ankles and other injuries are common in the daily rough and tumble life of children. Your podiatrist is able to recommend the best treatment for all your children’s feet and leg problems.
Warts may develop on children’s feet or hands. Warts are not always painful but they are highly contagious so your child should be careful when using public showers and changing rooms.
Your podiatrist will be able to advise you on the best course of action. This may include padding in the shoe to relieve pressure on the wart. If the wart is painful it can be removed.
